We traveled to Casa Manana in Ft. Worth on Tuesday May 7th to watch Seussical Jr. We had a GREAT time! It was fun singing along with some of the songs from the Seussical program we performed in April at a PTA meeting.

Cinco De Mayo

We researched and learned more about Cinco De Mayo. We ended the week on May 3rd with a pinata and birthday treats to celebrate Mrs. Hay's birthday. Also, students participated in the Cinco De Mayo parade in downtown Grand Prairie. Thank you to the teachers, parents, and students who came out to walk with Florence Hill!

Open House and Jump Rope for Heart

Thursday, March 7th was Open House at Florence Hill Elementary. We had a Dr. Seuss theme in our classroom. In the hallway on one board we displayed our sock writing from the book Fox in Socks. We read Cat in the Hat and students wondered about "What if the Cat in the Hat came to my house" they took a "puzzled/deep thought" picture and then wrote about it in a "thinking bubble." Below the two bulletin boards they wrote "I do not like green eggs and ham but I do like _________" and drew a picture of their favorite food taken from the book, Green Eggs and Ham. We read many book written by Dr. Seuss and graphed which book was our favorite. After collecting our data......One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish was the class favorite with eleven. Above the boards each student created their own kite and created nouns, adjectives, and verbs on their kite. As you entered our room their were truffula trees like those seen in The Lorax. Inside the classroom students had work displayed on their desk from writing samples to a science foldable about the sun and moon. There was also a slideshow of pictures taken throughout the year running. It was a great night!

100th Day!

Friday, February 8, 2013 we celebrated the 100th day of first grade! Students were met when they arrived with a festive entry into the classroom, 100th day pencil, sticker, crown and glasses to accompany their white shirt with 100 things on it! Students also enjoyed making their 100 day snack by counting out 10 groups of 10 different snack items to make 100th day "trail mix." Students also had their picture made with "100th day in first grade" picture frame....those pictures will appear in a special end of the year gift for each student :)

Just a reminder....Students need to continue reading the books in their book bags (these books are on their level and specific to your student). Please ask follow up questions when they are done reading to check for comprehension and you can have your child read to you on a timer to check for fluency (how fluid your child is reading the story...our goal by the end of first grade is 60 words per minute). Also, your student can get on spellingcity.com ("MHay1" is the username) to practice word wall words and word family words.

Tuesday, February 12th is Spaghetti dinner and Silent Auction before the PTA meeting at 7pm in the cafeteria. Fourth grade will perform once the PTA meeting is over.

Valentine's Day Party is this Thursday February 14th at 2:45pm in the classroom. Please send your child's valentines for each student in the class on Thursday. Thank you!
